The UA Religious Studies Program is happy to announce the program for the 2015 Robert A. Burns Lecture in celebration of the life and work of Thomas Merton (1915-1968) to be held on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the UA Poetry Center.
The night will begin with a reading from the writing of Thomas Merton led by UA Creative Writing Professor Fenton Johnson followed by a keynote presentation by reknowned Merton scholar Dr. Bonnie Thurston.
Dr. Thurston was a founding member of the International Thomas Merton Society and served as its third president. She has written some 30 articles on Merton and has given retreats and lectured on Merton widely in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Europe. She edited Thomas Merton and Buddhism (Fons Vitae Press, 2007), Hidden in the Same Mystery: Thomas Merton & Loretto (Fons Vitae, 2010) and Thomas Merton on Eastern Meditation (New Directions, 2012). Her work on Merton has been translated into Dutch, German, Italian and Spanish.
